The 2023 Golden Globe Awards ceremony is tomorrow night, so in preparation for my red carpet review, I thought I'd give a preview of some of the fabulous fashions that some of this year's nominees have worn to past red carpet events. Hopefully this will tide you through until tomorrow.
Best Actress - Movie, Drama
Cate Blanchette
Blanchette would look gorgeous wearing a trash bag, so she's pulled off some outfits that wouldn't have worked on anyone else. One of my favorites, however, was this ice-blue Giorgio Armani gown with short train and cascading floral accents, worn to the 2016 Oscars.
Viola Davis
Davis is a bit more hit or miss for me, but when she hits, she hits it out of the park, as with this gorgeous scarlet off-the-shoulder Armani gown, worn at the 2017 Oscars.
Ana de Armas
I'm a little less familiar with de Armas' style, but a quick Google search shows that she's not tied to a single style or designer. One of my favorites looks of hers was this striking black Louis Vuitton gown, which she wore to the 2021 world premiere of
No Time to Die.
Michelle Williams
Williams has worn strictly Louis Vuitton designs on the red carpet for years, and her glittery striped column at the 2017 SAG Awards was one of the best. Her pixie cut and slight figure are perfect with this straight silhouette.
Best Actress - Movie, Musical or Comedy
Lesley Manville
Manville frequently wears angled or open squared necklines, and one of her best looks in that style was this dark silver-blue satin embellished with a sparkly shoulder strap and matching belt, worn at the 2019 BAFTA Awards.
Margot Robbie
Another one who can look fabulous even in a less-than-fabulous dress, Robbie stunned in this strapless white Chanel column with a short train and silver draping at the neckline. The super-straight neckline and Christmas garland look of the draping weren't great, but Robbie rocked it anyway.
Anya Taylor-Joy
Taylor-Joy favors glamorous style on the red carpet, as demonstrated at the premiere of
Emma in 2020 when she channeled Audrey Hepburn in
My Fair Lady in a vintage Bob Mackie wedding gown and an ornate diamond collar. What a knockout!
Emma Thompson
Thompson is not a big fan of frou-frou red carpet wear, frequently donning a comfortable yet stylish pantsuit. However, she opted for a simply-cut Asian-inspired vintage black dress embellished with a sequined long-tailed bird for the 2014 SAG Awards. She paired it with gold Louboutin flat sandals, a hilarious nod to the Golden Globe awards the previous weekend, when she had removed her high heels on stage, calling them "painful" and "pointless."
Michelle Yeoh
Yeoh is a goddess, as exemplified at the 2019 Golden Globes, when she wore a dark green leather and lace column accented by a diamond necklace and earrings, and her own large emerald ring, which her character had also worn in
Crazy Rich Asians.Best Supporting Actress, Movie
Angela Bassett
Bassett is not afraid of big, bold colors and details, such as the huge shoulder pouf on this bubblegum pink Reem Acra gown, worn at the 2019 Oscars. She has the confidence and bearing to pull it off like no other.
Kerry Condon
Condon is something of a newcomer to the Hollywood scene, but given her beautiful white ruffled gown at the premiere of
Banshees of Inisherin at the Venice Film Festival in 2022, I have high hopes for her look tomorrow night.
Jamie Lee Curtis
Curtis is another perpetual red carpet stunner (and has been for about 4 decades), and her sleek black Stella McCartney gown accented by a fabulous diamond cuff, which she wore at the 2015 Emmy Awards, was no exception. Fittingly, it bore a striking similarity to the gown she'd worn at the Emmys 26 years prior. You GO, girl!
Dolly de Leon
Filipino actress de Leon is unfamiliar to me, but I am also looking forward to her look tomorrow night, based on the simple but elegant black and gold gown she wore for the premiere of her nominated film,
Triangle of Sadness, at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.
Carey Mulligan
Although Mulligan's waiflike figure lends itself beautifully to slender columns (which she frequently wears), she's one of the few petite celebs who can pull off a huge gown without being overwhelmed by it. I love her pairing of a simple bandeau with a high-waisted ballgown skirt in this metallic gold Valentino ensemble, worn at the 2021 Oscars.
Best Actress - Television, Drama
Emma D'Arcy
D'Arcy seems to favor rock-star chic and baggy jackets at her public appearances thus far, so I look forward to perhaps a leather pantsuit or even a motorcycle jacket paired with wide-legged trousers.
Laura Linney
Despite being a gorgeous woman, Linney does not often catch my eye on the red carpet. But every now and then she gets it perfectly right, as with her flowing red sleeveless Valentino gown from the 2001 Oscars.
Imelda Staunton
Staunton's red carpet looks tend to be a little "mother of the bride," so I expect to see something similar to this full, straight skirt and printed jacket which she wore at the 2019 Rome Film Festival.
Hillary Swank
Although Swank has stunned at numerous red carpet events since, her name always brings to my mind the image of the famous backless Guy Laroche gown she wore to the 2005 Oscars.
Zendaya
I've written an entire blog entire on just Zendaya's red carpet fashion, so it was hard to choose just one favorite look. But this Moschino butterfly gown from the premiere of
The Greatest Showman in 2017 has to be one of her best.
Best Actress - Television, Musical or Comedy
Quinta Brunson
Brunson slayed in this strapless copper Dolce & Gabbana gown with sequined bodice and swirling slit-up-to-there skirt at the 2022 Emmys. Va-va-voom!
Kaley Cuoco
Cuoco tends to go for
avant garde looks and frequently misses, so I much prefer when she tones it down with a simpler look, such as this icy green strapless Romona Keveza gown with frothy not-too-full skirt and matching clutch. It put the attention on her, not on her dress, as it should be.
Jenna Ortega
Ortega's fashion style reminds me of a young Zendaya. Most of her red carpets thus far have been movie premieres, but I expect her to wear something a bit more classic tomorrow, such as the tiered cream halter gown she wore to the premiere of
Christopher Robin in 2018.
Jean Smart
The off-the-shoulder white Christian Siriano gown that Smart wore to the 2022 Emmys is arguably the most beautiful red carpet gown I've ever seen. Simply stunning.
Best Actress - Television, Limited Series, Anthology Series, or TV Movie
Jessica Chastain
Chastain occasionally stumbles with her red carpet looks, but she is the queen of the strapless column, one of my favorites being the black-and-gold Alexander McQueen gown that she wore to the 2012 Oscars.
Julia Garner (also nominated as Best Supporting - Television, Musical-Comedy or Drama)
Julia Garner is not afraid to put it out there, literally or figuratively, on the red carpet. A good example is the black velvet Gucci column with silver floral appliques and navel-baring diamond-shaped cutout that she wore to the 2022 Emmys.
Lily James
Another celeb with plenty of red carpet wins to choose from, I'm going with this blush pink lace form-fitting Versace that James wore to her first appearance at the Oscars in 2022.
Julia Roberts
Roberts is another celeb who has worn countless gorgeous red carpet looks over the years, but one image always comes to my mind for her: the vintage black-and-white Valentino column she wore when she won the Oscar for
Erin Brockovitch in 2001.
Amanda Seyfried
So many looks to choose from, but I truly loved the drape of this dark peach taffeta Oscar de la Renta gown, with its slightly flared skirt and large fabric roses at the shoulders, which Seyfried wore to the "virtual" Golden Globes ceremony in 2021.
Best Supporting Actress - Television, Limited Series, Anthology Series, or TV Movie
Jennifer Coolidge
Coolidge is fond of shiny, sparkly fabrics and figure-hugging silhouettes, and one of the best was this off-the-shoulder emerald green and metallic gold Dolce & Gabbana column with a small train, which she wore at the 2022 Emmys.
Claire Danes
Another petite column queen who occasionally rocks a full-on ball gown, Danes was at her best at the 2015 SAG Awards, wearing a dark green Marc Jacobs halter column with a twisted bodice, keyhole cutout above the wide belt, and beading along the sides.
Daisy Edgar-Jones
Edgar-Jones' style reminds me of a young Emma Watson, particularly when she wore a white Fendi pantsuit with wide-legged pants and a loose jacket over a simple white bra to the premiere of
Fresh in 2022.
Niecy Nash
Nash's personality is a little larger-than-life, so it's not surprising that her red carpet fashions are sometimes a little over-the-top as well. But she was right on target at the Critics' Choice Awards in 2020 in this off-the-shoulder, blue and green sequined Tadashi Shoji Resort gown with a thigh-high slit.
Aubrey Plaza
Plaza often comes off as bland to me on the red carpet, even when she's wearing an interesting dress, but she did seem to come alive at the 2022 Season 2 premiere of
White Lotus in this striking red one-shouldered Monot cut-out dress.
Best Supporting Actress - Television, Musical-Comedy or Drama
Elizabeth Debicki
Willowy blonde Debicki tends to favor black and white gowns, but I find her the most striking in metallics like this sleek metallic gold Bottega Veneta gown with corset-style bodice that she wore to the premiere of
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 in 2017.
Hannah Einbinder
Although Einbinder frequently wears gowns on the red carpet, she has said that she prefers pants. She looked fabulous in her classically-tailored Giorgio Armani tuxedo at the 2022 Critics' Choice Awards.
Janelle James
James doesn't have a lot of red carpet events under her belt yet, but based on this terrific red velvet vintage Tom Ford for Gucci suit that she wore over a sheer black top to the Hollywood Critics Association TV Awards in 2022, she has the right instincts.
Sheryl Lee Ralph
Ralph's instincts rarely lead her astray, and they certainly didn't in this chic black strapless custom-designed Brandon Blackwood gown, with an orange satin-lined train perfectly coordinated with her tiny handbag. Her long spangled braid was the icing on the cake.
Non-Acting Categories
Sarah Polley (Best Screenplay)
An actress as well as a writer and filmmaker, the Toronto-born Polley was inducted into the Canadian Walk of Fame in 2010 wearing an art deco-style sheer black gown lined with white. In keeping with many "non-stars," I expect Polley to stick with a simple but chic look.
Hildur Guðnadóttir (Movie, Best Original Score)
Icelandic cellist and composer Guðnadóttir is no stranger to the red carpet, having won 6 major awards for her 2020 score of Joker (including the Oscar, Golden Globe, and Grammy). She seems to favor sleek black and silver, as at the 2020 Emmys, so I predict a similar look tomorrow.
Taylor Swift (Movie, Best Original Song)
Swift is always impeccable on the red carpet, whether she's wearing a strapless halter pantsuit or a ballgown, like this sparkly teal Elie Saab peekaboo dress from the 2015 Grammys.
Lady Gaga (Movie, Best Original Song)
Gaga can rock anything from a bacon dress to space funk to
haute couture, but this glamorous black strapless gown with hip accents and opera-length gloves paired with a large diamond necklace and swirled updo from the 2019 Oscars was one of my favorites.
Rihanna (Movie, Best Original Song)
Rihanna tends to go for over-the-top fashions, but unlike Lady Gaga, in a way that doesn't usually work for me. However, the frothy, empire-waisted, bubblegum pink, tiered tulle gown that she wore to the 2015 Grammy Awards was a winner in my book.
We'll just have to wait and see what tomorrow's red carpet brings!
