Since I've written about spring clothes for women, and spring clothes for men, it seems only right that I should write about spring fashions for younger people, as well. Let's start with teen girls - what's cool and in for them this season? The stores I looked at included Forever 21, H&M, Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister, Old Navy, Aeropostale, and JC Penney (Juniors department). Also, as a mom of a 13-year-old girl, I have avoided admittedly trendy super-cropped and/or super-tight tops, open backs, and (in my opinion) inappropriately short skirts. But I think this link shows that you can be cute and trendy without having to wear clothes that are tight or revealing!
One of the big trends I'm seeing for juniors this season is cherry and berry prints, such as this tie-back v-neck top ($43 at Abercrombie & Fitch) in cherry pattern. Pair this fitted top with any cut of jeans (see above), with a red flounced miniskirt, or with gray wide-leg pants. Other tops in a similar print include this ribbed button-down lettuce-edge top ($14 at Old Navy) and an easy berry graphic off-the-shoulder sweater ($29 at Hollister).
Babydoll style tops are huge this spring, whether fitted to the (cropped) waist, or loose and flared like this easy flutter sleeve babydoll top ($29 at Hollister) in white/blue pattern. Shoulders can often be worn either up or off-the shoulder. Flared styles like this look best with slimmer cut jeans or an athletic-cut skirt or skort. With jeans, pair with ballet flats; with a more athletic bottom go for white canvas sneakers.
This similarly-cut voile button-through blouse ($35 at Hollister) in butter yellow has an elasticized back and elastic-edge sleeves to give it a sleeker, more tailored silhouette that works with barrel-waisted ankle jeans and A-line print skirts. Pair either pants or skirt with colorful flat slides.
In the same way that a skort looks like a skirt but adds a degree of modesty, rompers look like dresses but avoid "wardrobe malfunctions". This eyelet scoop-neck romper ($25 at Aeropostale) in pink is a great example, with a flattering wide elasticized empire waist and a double-ruffle "skirt". Pair with a cropped denim jacket and coordinating denim bag, plus pretty much any kind of footwear (except Crocs).
For a more demure but still pretty and feminine look, go for a maxi dress like this chiffon ruffle rose maxi dress ($40 at Forever 21) in ivory/multi, with ruffled straps, a wide v-neck, and a flared skirt. The only accessories it needs are a delicate necklace and strappy low heel sandals.
A similar floral print dress, this on/off-the-shoulder drop-waist dress ($60 at Hollister) in white floral has a shorter hem that gives it a more casual feel. Add a soft wrap and ballet flats (or, let's be real, she'll want to wear pink Chucks) for a school dance, or go casual with a cute cardigan and platform slides.
Now go take her shopping!
